Fun Facts

  • Capybaras are the largest rodents in the world, belonging to the same family as cavies.

  • Capybaras are good swimmers and spend their day in the water to avoid the heat. Their fat gives them buoyancy and the partially webbed feet help them swim. When hiding from predators, they can stay under water for up to 5 minutes.

Threats & Conservation

IUCN Red List: Least Concern
IUCN Red List: Least Concern

Over-hunting has been the major cause of decline in some populations of capybaras. They are hunted for their skin to make leather and for their fur to make gloves. Their meat is also commonly eaten by local people.

Avoid buying products made with capybara leather or fur!
